By Thursday afternoon, there have been nearly 6,000 delays and almost 3,000 cancellations nationwide. The chaotic holiday travel is caused by what the National Weather Service calls a “once-in-a-generation” winter storm. The major winter storm is causing wind chill alerts from coast to coast, impacting nearly half of the U.S. population. Overall 300 million people are under weather alerts.

According to the tracker FlightAware, Chicago’s O’hare International is seeing the highest number of cancellations. Denver International has the highest number of delays nationwide at 19%. Major hubs expect to see even more cancellations as the weather gets worse on Friday, the busiest day of Christmas travel.

With so many states being impacted, your flight is likely canceled or delayed. You’ve probably decided to stay at home to avoid the chaos. Now it’s time to work on getting your money back for you and your family’s airline tickets.
Major airlines like United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Airlines have waivers if you are forced to change a flight due to the weather. However, before you rebook, read the fine print. Rules and requirements can be different when rebooking with a waiver. Other airlines are offering waivers, but they are only for flights to specific airports.

Wherever you decide to travel in the next few days, bundle up. Getting sick has been concerning for many while a medicine shortage has left pharmacy shelves bare.
