After a bus driver lost consciousness, a heroic 7th grader from Michigan sprang into action, took control of the school bus carrying 66 students and brought it to a stop. The student, identified as Dillon Reeves also yelled for classmates to call 911 as he brought the large vehicle to a halt, according to the surveillance video.
“Someone call 911, now!” Students can be heard screaming in the background.
Reeves said he knew exactly what to do as he had repeatedly watched the driver stop the bus on several other trips to and from school.
Dillon was traveling home with other classmates from Carter Middle School in Warren, Michigan, on Wednesday when the bus driver “became lightheaded and lost consciousness,” Superintendent Robert Livernois issued in a statement to families.
Livernois said that the “quick-thinking” seventh grader “saw the driver in distress, stepped to the front of the bus, and helped bring it to a stop without incident.”
The superintendent added that Reeves had the “wherewithal” to slowly press down on the hand break to bring the bus to a gradual stop, as opposed to slamming it down in the harrowing moment.
When the boy, who isn’t even of age to drive a car, was asked how he knew what to do, he simply stated, “I watch [the bus driver] do it every day.”
Dillon’s father, Steve Reeves credits the fact that his son does not have a smart phone, which makes him more alert and observant of his surroundings.
