If the amount of law-breaking criminals in New York City declined drastically over two months, that would be great news. Unfortunately, it’s police officers in the Big Apple that can’t wait to leave, and they’re doing it at a very concerning rate.

In the first two months of this year, 239 officers left the NYPD.  That’s over four cops per week, about 25% more than the number who left last year in that same period and more than double the departures of 2021.

Here’s a quote from the President of the Police Benevolent Association, Patrick Lynch.

“The NYPD staffing emergency is approaching the point of no return. We are losing cops to better pay and benefits in other policing jobs almost every day.”

The reasons are pretty obvious. The tone and messaging of mainstream media are predominantly negative about law enforcement, which trickles down to how ungrateful citizens treat the police. Combine that with poor working conditions, politics, and pay, and it’s bye-bye blue. The New York Post quoted a cop saying this.

“Precinct cops are being forced to work an inhumane amount of overtime, including on their days off, while being penalized for minor uniform and administrative infractions. Meanwhile, precincts barely have enough personnel to meet the minimum required to safely answer 911 calls.”

Keep your head on a swivel if you take a trip to the Big Apple. Hopefully, city officials will find a way to slow this trend down.  A spokesman for City Hall told reporters that public safety is the city’s “top priority.”

Let’s see if they put their money where their mouth is.
