With a new year comes resolutions and ways to improve. Less alcohol or a new look might be the change CNN’s CEO is making in the new year. According to Variety, the network’s coverage of New Year’s Eve was a major topic during a recent town hall meeting. CNN CEO Chris Licht told staff he felt on camera drinking eroded the credibility and damaged the respectability of CNN talent.

The tipsy antics of talent during the New Year’s Eve Coverage may have helped ratings. The broadcast isn’t the most watched on that night. The most viewed on New Year’s Eve is Ryan Seacrest’s ABC program. However, Anderson Cooper, Don Lemon, and their coworkers often went viral for the shenanigans that happened throughout the night. One year, Lemon got his ear pierced on live television. More shots tend to get tossed back when Cooper is paired with friend and sometimes co-host Andy Cohen. Now, in 2023 that’s all over. CEO Licht also announced drinking alcohol could not happen off camera either.

The broadcast might be less interesting without the antics, but the CEO’s rule isn’t different from any other boss’s rule. Studies even show alcohol in the workplace can lead to accidents and lawsuits, two words a company does not want to do.
Web Tribunal shared some stats on drinking at work. Numbers showed alcohol contributes to 11% of workplace-related injuries and accidents. Numbers also showed U.S. companies spend $33 billion and $68 billion yearly due to employee alcohol abuse. 2.3 million employees drink before work.
