Twitter’s new feature allows its Blue subscribers to tweet up to 10,000 characters, along with the option for bold and italic font. The new additions accommodate essay-style, longer-form writing as opposed to rapid snippets of text which have defined the platform since its conception. The limit doubled to 280 characters from 140 back in 2017.

The company’s subscription product, Twitter Blue, allows the lengthier tweet option at a fee of $8 per month, and includes the “blue tick” verification badge which indicates that Twitter has “been in contact with the person or entity the account is representing and verified that it is approved.”

A tweet by one of Twitter’s official accounts boasted the new writing and reading experience starting on the platform.

Also developing its monetization options, Twitter is permitting users to subscribe to specific content creators to receive content best matched to their interests, which is similar to the offerings from services like Substack. Creators would see substantial profits from subscription income, according to CEO Elon Musk.

“You will receive whatever money we receive, so that’s 70% for subscriptions on iOS & Android (they charge 30%) and ~92% on web (could be better, depending on payment processor),” Musk tweeted. “After first year, iOS & Android fees drop to 15% and we will add a small amount on top of that, depending on volume. We will also help promote your work. Our goal is to maximize creator prosperity.”
