Ron DeSantis is leading Trump nationally in a new CNN poll for the first time.

Trump stands at 37% while DeSantis polls at 39%. Nikki Haley, for the first time, leapfrogged over Mike Pence for third place, garnering a better but still paltry 7% of the vote.

This is the first national poll that has Trump losing to DeSantis. On average, each poll has had the Florida governor fifteen points below the former president.

This comes as Trump prepares to gather a deeply researched opposition file on his likely opponent.

Politico reports that Trump and his PAC are looking into DeSantis’s record as an assistant US Attorney, where they will call him a lenient prosecutor, particularly on the issue of child pornography.

Focus groups have already been convened to see how the initial opposition research will land.

However, DeSantis’s former supervisor during his stint in the US Attorney’s office says that the sentences, which may seem light to a casual observer, are par for the course, and that often plea deals are the best way to get a sentencing where distributors could be let off entirely in a trial.

Deep analysis of DeSantis’s time as asst. US Attorney has yet to be released. Expect us to do some digging, and we’ll tell you if there’s any “there” there soon. Stay tuned.
