Viewers couldn’t get enough of Selena Gomez’s Met Gala ensemble—in fact, she had the most liked look of the evening, but she wasn’t actually there. Millions of users were duped by the AI-generated photo where it appears that a fan superimposed Gomez’s face on a 2022 Met Gala photo of Lily James.

The phony pic captioned with “surprise appearance” sent the Twitter audience reeling over the popstar’s non-existent presence and fashion sense.

Although bogus, the pic has garnered over 23.5 million views and 399,000 likes, making it the most popular photo of fashion’s biggest night, even amongst actual attendees. By the end of the evening, Anne Hathaway’s image got the Twitter silver medal with 234,000 likes.

Twitter’s recent disclaimer added to the post cites the image as being “altered” and that Gomez’s last Met Gala attendance was back in 2018. Despite the admittance, Twitter users continue to gush over the morphed muse, praising “her” faux appearance.

Selena has kept quiet thus far, not acknowledging the viral photo’s controversy.
