Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on Monday that Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will finally receive a Secret Service protective detail following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The move comes after months of resistance from the Biden administration, which largely ignored calls from RFK, Trump, and others to extend federal protection to the third-party candidate.

“In light of this weekend’s events, the President has directed me to work with the Secret Service to provide protection to Robert Kennedy Jr, both prior to and after the events of this past weekend,” Mayorkas said in a White House press briefing. “The Secret Service enhanced former President Trump’s protection based on the evolving nature of threats to the former president and his imminent shift from presumptive nominee to nominee.”
