The more that’s learned about FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, the more people hope there is a jail cell in a federal prison with his name on it.
The facts and details are leaking out, and it sounds like the plot of a movie—a really bad movie with lousy actors.
Bankman-Fried was a self-described progressive who handed out money to Democratic politicians like Frank Sinatra strolling the Tropicana circa 1963.
The Washington Free Beacon uncovered details of who was getting his handouts, and it includes nine members of the House Financial Services Committee who, in total, got $300K. That panel will eventually look at what went down at FTX.
Bankman-Fried contributed nearly $40 million to Democratic campaigns. He also wrote checks to a few Republicans for $262,200. The only congressman who said they would return their donation is Chuy Garcia, a Democrat from Illinois. He got $2,900 from FTX execs, and his PAC called Protect Our Future received $200,000.
Maxine Waters is a Democratic member of the House from California. She was asked if the money received by her fellow politicians should be returned.
“Well, I don’t want to get into that. Both sides, Democrats and Republicans, have received donations. So thank you.”
Did he make the donations strategically? Thinking he might need a favor or ten in the future.
Based on what we’ve learned since his company imploded, wouldn’t it seem more surprising if that wasn’t his intention?
