One of the most important moments in the liturgical year falls during the period called Holy Week.
Commencing with Palm Sunday and ending with Easter Sunday, Holy Thursday is also commemorated by Christians towards the end of the Lenten season.
Roman Catholics particularly honor Holy Thursday by attending mass – it marks the day when the Last Supper and Washing of the Feet occurred with Jesus and His disciples before He was arrested and crucified.
The term ‘Maundy’ comes from the Latin word “command,” and according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholics prepare for the Lord’s resurrection throughout the Lenten season which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday.
The practices throughout this time vary depending on the denomination. Lent is a season of reflection and sacrifices, typically involving fasting or giving up certain foods in order to lean more on Jesus instead of worldly vices. The length of this season lasts 40 days to commemorate Jesus’ journey fasting in the desert, according to the Bible.
#MaundyThursday is currently trending on social media platforms, including Twitter:
