Call it the clash of the titans.

Mark Cuban is taking Elon Musk to task in a series of tweets.

It all stems from Musk’s plan to compete with ChatGPT, creating his own artificial intelligence platform.

Cuban notes that Musk will have a giant leg up. All artificial intelligence, of course, is mined from previously existing data. Musk has the most comprehensive database of them all, as the info from millions of users can be gleaned. Still, Cuban calls it “scary,” and it’s clear to see why.

He also says Elon Musk’s free speech advocacy is far from pure, and is actually profit driven.

He isn’t pushing free speech. When Elon Musk goes out of his way to engage with and promote the accounts and tweets of people who disagree with him, then I’ll believe he is about free speech. Until then, this is just an adventure for him.”

Essentially, what Cuban is driving at, is that the more open speech there is, the more there’s a wealth of data for Musk to mine from and profit off of. Cuban is implying what many Musk detractors are screaming from the mountain tops. That Musk bought Twitter to get in the AI game with a massive leg up, with mountains of exclusive data that he could use as a base.

It was never about Twitter, Cuban feels, it was about being the premier power player in the future and likely lucrative AI industry.

Cuban also lobs another criticism tweeting, “Everyone has access. But Elon Musk has the ultimate reach and control. Who he supports or denigrates is the Twitter equivalent of State intervention. It’s a difficult position for him to be in. But rather than saying Twitter is the home of free speech, I wish he would just call it like it is. Twitter is his platform and he is going to use it to support and influence the positions he wants to support and influence.”

Cuban is referring to a number of tweets in Turkey being censored in regards to criticism of the current Turkey President Erdogan, who is locked in a tight runoff election. Musk countered that if they weren’t censored, Twitter would be banned completely in the nation.

But Cuban implies that Musk, in addition to the AI industry benefits, is using Twitter to implement his viewpoint in politics and policy.

Hard to say if Cuban has a point or if this is a bit of a chicken little situation. The next few years should tell us which it is.
