University of California freshman and eldest son of Lakers superstar LeBron James, Bronny James, was hospitalized Monday after going into cardiac arrest during basketball practice with the Trojans.

Bronny, 18, was placed in the ICU and is now said to be in stable condition, according to a family spokesperson.

“Yesterday while practicing, Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital. He is now in stable condition and no longer in ICU. We ask for respect and privacy for the James family, and we will update the media when there is more information.”

Bronny is the second USC player to suffer from cardiac arrest after former five-star player Vince Iwuchukwu suffered cardiac arrest last summer.

The statement continued: “LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.”

According to Yahoo! Sports, Bronny was a top recruit out of Sierra Canyon High School, averaging 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists last season. He is the No. 27 overall player in the 2023 class and the second-highest ranked signee in USC’s four-person recruiting class that ranks No. 4 nationally at 247Sports.

The heart health of athletes has always been a concern in the world of sports, but within the last two years, it’s been a major focus after several high profile incidents – Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin for example – occurred.
