If you know anyone in the state of Michigan, call them this morning and ask if they are filthy rich. Someone in that state is, after purchasing the one and only winning Mega Millions lottery ticket that was worth $1.05 billion.

The winning numbers in Friday’s drawing were 4, 26, 42, 50 and 60.  The Mega Ball was 24. The lucky winning ticket was purchased in a Kroger store in Novi, a suburb of Detroit. “Someone in Michigan woke up to life-changing news this morning, and Kroger Michigan congratulates the newest Michigan multimillionaire,” said Rachel Hurst, a regional spokeswoman for the grocery chain.

It’s the third-largest lottery prize in U.S. history, and the jackpot had been growing since September 15, the last time a winning ticket was sold.

The winner in Michigan came just two days after someone won $731.1 million in the Powerball jackpot.

The winner has a decision to make now. Take the payouts in 30 annual installments or go for the cash prize, which would lower the total take to $776.6 million before taxes. (After taxes, the winner would take home $557 million).

The odds of winning were one in 302.5 million.

The winner has a decision to make.  Try to lay low, and let some of the hype pass before coming forward? Or do a press conference, and then start dealing with the multitude of “friends” and people with “business proposals” that will no doubt come out of the woodwork.  “I wouldn’t be surprised if the winning ticket holder held onto that ticket for a little bit, got their affairs in order, put together a financial plan and then reached out to contact us,” said Michigan Lottery spokesman Jake Harris.

If you aren’t the new billionaire in Michigan, good luck on the next Mega Millions drawing. The jackpot will be $20 million.
