The European Union is not good at hosting parties. They are, however, excellent at wasting money.

A total of six people showed up for their 24-hour metaverse party. One of them was a journalist named Vince Chadwick.

Boy, it sure sounded fun. It was billed as a “beach party” with “music and fun” on the docket. The idea was to launch the EU’s “Global Getaway” strategy, and five Europeans know about it now.

Here’s the crazy part; the party cost $407,000.  That’s almost $68,000 per person who bothered to show up, including the reporter.

Back in October, the party planners gave a sneak peek at the virtual-reality venue where the party would be held, and people instantly hated it.

Here are some quotes from the first reaction to the mega-meta flop. “Depressing and embarrassing.” Not exactly inspiring. “Digital garbage.” Which leaves little to the imagination.

The party was geared toward 18-35-year-olds who spend a lot of time on Instagram and TikTok and aren’t into politics.  They didn’t find people in those demos.

There are no words to describe just how lame this event was, but feel free to go to social media to find clips, and I think you’ll agree.

The reporter there thought he got the date wrong because nobody was there. The all-day party saw every attendee leave in the first hour.

The group that put on the party, “Global Getaway,” has a rather ambitious goal of raising $300 billion in investments by 2027, and kudos to them for their incentive. They want to help the world be less reliant on China in the post-pandemic world.

One European diplomat who saw the party told the Times of London, “Beijing must be wetting themselves with laughter. It would be funny if it was not a serious project, and if we had not paid for it all.”
