There isn’t a single defense in the NFL that can fully put a halt to Patrick Mahomes and his Chiefs’ offense. There is, however, a barber in Kansas City that darn near did.
In one of the craziest Super Bowl week stories of all time, and one that can only happen in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, a team barber for the Chiefs had tested positive for COVID-19 and was scheduled to give about 20 Chiefs players a haircut.
Adam Shefter, star NFL reporter for ESPN explained what happened on Twitter. “There were over 20 Chiefs players and staffers, including QB Patrick Mahomes, scheduled Sunday to get a haircut with the barber who tested positive for COVID, per sources,” Schefter tweeted Wednesday. “The Chiefs acted wisely and aggressively, and pulled the barber – mid-cut – once his test results came in.”
Two Chiefs, Demarcus Robinson and Daniel Kilgore, have been placed on the COVID reserve list after being contact traced back to that same barber.
NFL.com reporter Tom Pelissero provided more details in a story he posted. “Sources say the barber tested negative five consecutive days before he was allowed to enter the Chiefs’ facility — including a Saturday PCR test that came back negative Sunday,” Pelissero wrote on Tuesday. “The barber took an additional rapid test as a precaution before entering the facility Sunday, but the results were delayed briefly because of a line of friends and family also getting tested. He was wearing double PPE and was still cutting Kilgore’s hair — the first in a line of players waiting for haircuts — when the positive result came back. The barber was immediately removed; in a follow-up interview with NFL officials, the barber said he’d also cut Robinson’s hair the previous day away from the facility.”
Patrick Mahomes needs to make sure if anyone is cutting his hair between now and Sunday, it’s that barber on the State Farm commercials that seems to air constantly.
