From home remedies to chiropractic visits, here’s what has worked best for me.

As a TMJ veteran, I have been through it all.

If you suffer from constant jaw clenching, teeth grinding, or a sore and inflamed jaw, you might just have TMJ.

What is TMJ?

Short for temporomandibular joint, TMJ is a chronic or acute condition that occurs when the muscles and ligaments around your jaw joints become inflamed or irritated.
These muscles are also known as “masseter muscles.” The pain may be mild or severe depending on your condition. These muscles are located at the base of your jaw.
The easiest way to find them is to place your fingers on your lower jaw and bite down and clench your teeth as hard as possible.
The more the muscles, pop out, the greater the pain typically.

Symptoms of TMJ Include:

  • Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints
  • Clenching your jaw during the day
  • Aching pain in and around your ear
  • Tinnitus, or ringing in your ears
  • Grinding your teeth while you sleep
  • Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing
  • Headaches
  • Aching facial pain
  • Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth
  • Clicking sounds when you chew

Physical therapy or chiropractors may assist with the pain, but I have tried both, and Botox has BY FAR, been the most effective treatment.

Don’t even bother with those silly mouth guards they tell you to wear at night. Not only are they useless for people who clench their jaw CONSTANTLY (we can’t help it!), but they don’t WORK!

The Solution: BOTOX

A few quick injections on each side and the pain is INSTANTLY relieved. It takes about 2 weeks to fully kick in, but if you suffer as much as I do, the neurotoxins will get to work immediately.

Another PERK is that it will slim your jaw. The way the Botox works is it causes the muscles to stay relaxed. No more clenching. No more pain. No more earaches. Just relief.

It’s one of the BEST investments I have made for myself.

The only downside with this treatment is the cost and frequency of treatments needed.

To maintain your results and a pain-free jaw, you will need to get Botox every 3-4 months. Botox is expensive, I know, but when you suffer from the pain and discomfort of TMJ, you’re willing to do anything to help.

It’s really unfortunate that most insurance companies do not cover this cost… maybe one day.

Depending on how many units you need, the cost will vary.

I get about 30 units on each side because I have TMJ pretty severely. Your nurse practitioner will determine how many units are most appropriate for your case.

Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport are all commonly used to treat the masseter muscles. The price per unit ranges anywhere from $8-$20 and your total treatment cost could be anywhere from $160-$1000 per session.
