The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns about a deadly Listeria outbreak. The agency says the latest episode has been linked to deli meats and cheese.

So far, 16 people have reported being sick. One person died, and seven people were rushed to the hospital. The outbreak has been detected in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, and California. The CDC says most people who fell sick reported eating meat or cheese from deli counters. The agency is now working to link the outbreak to specific delis and products.

According to the CDC, listeria is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness, killing about 260 people per year. It is also essential to know the bacteria can continue to grow while refrigerated.
The CDC is giving these helpful tips to protect you and your family from listeria. First, keep the kitchen clean. Make sure to prepare meats and vegetables separately and always sanitize. Keep your fridge cool at 41 degrees Fahrenheit. The CDC also recommends avoiding consuming raw milk or products with raw milk. The agency says eating foods made from raw milk is one of the riskiest ways to get listeria. Pregnant women are advised not to eat soft cheese, including queso and feta.

Pregnant women and older adults are considered high risk. The CDC advises against eating raw or lightly cooked sprouts if you are at high risk. For all other leafy greens, wash them thoroughly and wash your hands with soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling them.
