There will be an interesting showdown at Twitter if and when Elon Musk completes his $44 billion purchase of the social media company.
Here’s why. Musk prefers that employees show up at the office to work, and Twitter has been at the forefront of the pajama brigade, not only allowing employees to work from home during the pandemic but going so far as saying that employees were welcome to permanently work from home if they preferred.
Thursday, Musk was involved in a town hall style meeting with Twitter employees, meeting the troops for the first time. Of course, it was done remotely, and the topic of in-office work came up.
Here’s a quote from Musk that someone who attended the meeting told Insider.
“You want to aspire to do things in person. If somebody is exceptional at their job, then it’s possible for them to be effective, even working remotely.”
According to Leslie Berland, who moderated the meeting and has the title of “head of people,” 1,500 “tweeps” (people who work for Twitter. Get it?) work from home or remotely, and roughly 6,000 are hybrid.
Those numbers will change for the tweeps if Musk is in charge. He has a general rule for employees who want to avoid going to the office; they better be elite.
At his day job, running Tesla, employees are required to spend 40 hours minimum at the office. If not, it is assumed they have resigned.
Musk said he told leaders to provide a list of “excellent contributors,” and they are the employees that potentially have the option of avoiding the office.
