Say this about the sport of boxing in 2021. It’s weird, bizarre, and nothing like the sport it’s been since its inception.

It’s essentially a monthly televised freak show featuring C-list celebs, internet influencers, or washed up former fighters.

Oh, and you might even get a former President of the United States as one of the television announcers.

It was a combo of all of the above on Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale, as the social video app Triller put on a pay-per-view fight between Evander Holyfield and Vitor Belfort.

There’s one word do describe what happened in the ring. Pathetic. Holyfield is 58-years old and has not been in a fight for a decade.  But he needed the money, so he showed up and got his legacy and face beat in by 44-year old former MMA fighter Belford.

It was over in a matter of seconds, with Belfort ending it with a first round TKO, and if the referee had not stopped the fight Holyfield may have woken up in the hospital.

Holyfield actually took this fight with a week’s notice, as he filled in for Oscar De La Hoya, who was scratched from the card because he tested positive for coronavirus.

The only thing that could have made the night more strange actually occurred, as former President Donald Trump was hired as a commentator for the card.

That’s the sport of boxing in 2021.  Enjoy it if you can.
