New York City Restauranteur Danny Meyer is closing two of his trendy restaurants as a historic Manhattan hotel turns into a housing shelter for incoming migrants. The Redbury Hotel is a 120-year-old NYC landmark located on East 29th St and Madison Avenue (NoMad) in Manhattan. The notorious building began housing migrants earlier in the month as NYC struggles to find proper housing for more than 60,000 illegal immigrants each night.

Meyer, who runs The Union Square Hospitality Group, announced restaurants Marta and Maialino will host their final service on August 25. Residents expressed heavy disappointment that their favorite pizza and wine bar will be replaced by a home for the influx of migrants.

“As tenants of the Redbury, our two restaurants, which occupy the lobby floor, have been eagerly anticipating the hotel’s full post-pandemic reopening” USHG wrote on social media.

“While we admire and respect the Redbury’s decision [to house migrants], the viability of our business relies significantly on hotel-related food and beverage operations, including event venues and the lobby bar, spaces that are now unavailable for our use,” read the hospitality company’s statement.

This news comes shortly after Mayor Eric Adams and his administration constructed a huge ‘tent city’ in Randall’s Island that plans on housing 2,000 migrants. However, this is just a small fraction compared to the thousands of illegal immigrants who remain on the streets of New York City.

Critics took to Twitter to share their thoughts on Meyer’s recent restaurant closings, Mayor Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul’s leadership, and the ongoing problem of thousands of migrants illegally crossing U.S. borders and needing a place to live.

According to The Daily Mail, Meyer is worth an estimated $400 million and has been a major donor to the Democratic Party, donating tens of thousands of dollars in recent years.

A representative for the hospitality group said it is actively looking to find new locations for both restaurants, as well as job placements for all employees impacted by the closures.
