If there is one thing Democrats and Republicans, cats and dogs, men and women, and Hatfields and McCoys can universally agree on, it’s this; WiFi service on airplanes sucks.

It always has, but could there be hope for people who want and need to get work done when flying from Los Angeles to Miami or New York to Dallas?

Delta Air Lines has been conducting g texts of SpaceX’s Starling satellite internet, and they may add that service on flights soon.  SpaceX has been promoting Starling as a low-cost, high-speed service that can provide internet access worldwide.

Elon Musk has been singing the praises of his service and said it is ideal for airlines. He said it would provide low latency and half gigabit connectivity in the air. Musk mentioned in 2021 that his goal was to get Starling certified for the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 planes because they are the most popular planes in the sky for airlines.

As of March, Starlink was sitting at 250,000 subscribers globally. A company like Starlink has to jump through several hoops before its service can be available to the masses.  The FCC has already cleared SpaceX to conduct tests for the service; any new equipment being used would have to be approved by the FAA.

SpaceX has launched almost 2,000 satellites into space and plans on sending thousands more into orbit as it expands the service.  They will have some competition from Amazon, however.  “Project Kuiper” is Amazon’s new satellite service set to provide low-cost broadband internet service.
