With a handicap to match his waistline, Charles Barkley will take his herky-jerky golf swing to The Match 3 for all the world to see.
Sportico reported that Barkley will take part in the made-for-TV event on Nov. 27. The field will feature third-time participant Phil Mickelson, second-time participant Peyton Manning and another newcomer, NBA star Steph Curry, who is quite good and played twice on the Korn Ferry Tour (a rung below the PGA).
Barkley, on the other hand, is not good. He is turrrrible. But after being a commentator for the first two staging’s of The Match, his move to the links is sure to make people laugh at his self-deprecation and trash talk while also cringing at his spasmatic swing.
Although Barkley once was a decent golfer many years ago, the yips got hold of his game and he now regularly pulls up the rear at celebrity golf tournaments. Even renowned golf coach Hank Haney could not fix Barkley’s game for TV.
A recent story about Barkley’s golf passion in The Athletic told how fellow Phoenix residents and former pro athletes, Roy Green and Dan Majerle, preyed on his penchant for gambling and his inability to hit the ball straight.
Majerle, a former NBA player, said Barkley is “our ATM sometimes” and Green, a former NFL wide receiver, said, “That’s why I haven’t worked in over 30-some years. I’ve got Charles.”
Poor Phil. If this event structure is paired, he is going to have to carry Barkley, and we all know Phil already has had recurring back problems.
