The Open Society Foundation, the international charity and grantmaking network founded by wealthy globalist George Soros, is set to end most of its operations within the European Union. The OSF, now controlled by the aging billionaire’s son Alexander Soros, will instead focus on advancing liberal causes in other parts of the world in a “radical shift of strategic direction.”

George Soros, a Hungarian-born Jew who made his fortune in the United States after World War II, has made it his life’s work to promote the values of liberalism, democracy, and open borders around the world. His Open Society Institute was created in 1993, then rebranded as the Open Society Foundation in 2010. Since its creation, the organization has leveraged the majority of Soros’ $25 billion in assets to advocate for sweeping social and political change. According to his critics, Soros’ work has also been responsible for multiple mass immigration crises in Europe and North America, and his political contributions have helped put soft-on-crime politicians in office for decades.
The OSF announced in June that the 93-year-old financer would be stepping down and allowing his son Alexander, 38, to take his place. As part of that leadership transition, the foundation also announced a 40% reduction in staff, particularly in its European divisions, as it prepares to adopt a new operating model.

“Ultimately, the new approved strategic direction provides for withdrawal and termination of large parts of our current work within the European Union, shifting our focus and allocation of resources to other parts of the world,” read an internal email obtained by Reuters. “This shift is not a reflection on past work and the many contributions by staff over the years, but rather a forward-looking decision rooted in future opportunities to make a significant impact.”
This decision indicates that the OSF will no longer be prioritizing its efforts within the European Union, instead focusing on broader global efforts. However, representatives of the foundation clarified that support would continue for regions like the Balkans, Moldova, and Ukraine.
It remains unclear where the majority of the Open Society Foundation’s attention will be directed, but the elder Soros has been increasingly vocal about his desire to see regime change in China. According to Soros, Chinese President Xi Jinping is “the greatest threat that open societies face today.”
At the same time, Alexander Soros, who calls himself “more political” than his father, has expressed a desire to mobilize against the Republican Party in the United States. The OSF-run Democracy PAC has donated millions to the campaigns of district attorneys and law enforcement officials that promote left-wing reforms in the justice system, and Alex Soros himself has taken an active role in trying to keep former President Donald Trump out of office in 2024.
“As much as I would love to get money out of politics, as long as the other side is doing it, we will have to do it, too,” he told the Wall Street Journal last month.
