How do you feel about feeding your family meat made in a lab? If you’re not convinced lab-made meat is safe, you will soon have to start carefully checking labels at the grocery store. The FDA is now approving lab-grown meat to be sold in stores. The California-based company Upside Foods will soon sell its products. First, its facilities must be inspected by the Department of Agriculture. All meat won’t be made in a lab. So far, the FDA has only approved chicken to be created.
The CEO of Upside Foods, Uma Valeti, compares creating chicken to brewing beer. Valeti says it’s a similar process, but instead of growing yeast or microbes, they’re growing animal cells. Valeti also spoke with CNN earlier this year, making it clear Upside Foods products are not vegan, vegetarian, or plant-based. He says it’s real meat made with animals.
Announcements of lab-made meat from other companies are sure to come soon. The FDA states they are ready to work with more food developers that use animal cells to produce food.
The question now is, will America buy this new product? According to Science Alert, a study revealed many people were disgusted with the idea of eating lab meat. The study suggests that to sell the product, work must be done to convince consumers it’s safe and real meat. Advocates believe that lab-made products can help with the food shortage, and climate crisis and reduce the need to slaughter animals. Some also believe it reduces the chance of illnesses caused by animals.
