Billionaire Elon Musk is adding an AI company to his already long list of entrepreneurial endeavors. Named xAI, the venture is set to potentially compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The startup officially went live with a website and Twitter page on July 12. In less than two days, xAI’s Twitter account gained close to half a million followers.

“Today we announce the formation of xAI. The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe,” the company’s website reads.

Musk confirmed in a tweet: “Announcing formation of @xAI to understand reality.”

According to the site, the company employs some engineers who previously worked for major companies in similar fields like Google and OpenAI.

The timing of Musk’s new company comes shortly after Musk criticized recent fast-paced developments in AI.

“If I could press pause on advanced AI digital super-intelligence, I would. But it doesn’t seem like that is realistic,” Musk said, feeling optimistic about xAI being safer than its competitors because it will be “maximally curious, maximally truth-seeking.”

The Wall Street Journal reported on xAI back in April when the company listed Dan Hendrycks, a researcher and advisor for the Center for AI Safety.

Musk informed Tucker Carlson back in April that he planned to make a “maximum truth-seeking AI” stating that “An AI that cares about understanding the universe is unlikely to annihilate humans,” Musk told the Carlson on Fox News  at the time, “because we are an interesting part of the universe.”

Musk is now in charge of half a dozen companies including Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink and Twitter.
