Nobody has experienced a year as Elon Musk did in 2022. On top of the daily drama that accompanied his purchase of Twitter, he reportedly became the first to lose $200 billion.

As bad as that sounds, you have to have $200 billion to lose $200 billion, and he still has $137 billion left, so it’s not like he’s going to get a lot of sympathy or anything.

Bloomberg reported that Musk’s net worth peaked in November of 2021 when it hit $340 billion.  He was far and away, the richest person in the world. Then 2022 happened. It was a slow drain for 20 months as Tesla stock started plummeting, and $203 billion later, Musk is no longer the richest person in the world. That tile belongs to Bernard Arnault, the CEO of LVMH.

Tesla stock dropped 65% in 2022, and his critics say it was mainly due to his focus on Twitter which he officially took over in October.

Finding a CEO for Twitter could help, and he said he’s serious about naming someone if he can find the person “foolish enough to take the job.”

By the way, Musk isn’t the only mega-rich billionaire to take a financial bath in 2022. Steve Ballmer lost $20 billion in net worth. Bill Gates is down almost $30 billion, Sergey Brin saw $44 billion disappear, and his Google co-founder Larry Page is down $45.3 billion.

Jeff Bezos lost $85.2 billion net worth thanks to Amazon shares falling 50%, and his ex-wife MacKenzie Scott will have billions less to make it rain on charities and organizations she’s been funding. Her net worth was trimmed by $37.3 billion.
