Elon Musk revealed on Monday that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has uncovered evidence that FEMA spent $59 million to house illegal migrants in luxury hotels in New York City last week—which, if true, would put FEMA in direct violation of President Donald Trump’s new immigration policies.

“The [DOGE] team just discovered that FEMA sent $59M LAST WEEK to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants,” Musk wrote on X. “Sending this money violated the law and is in gross insubordination to the President’s executive order.”

“That money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high end hotels for illegals!” he continued. “A clawback demand will be made today to recoup those funds.”

President Trump has expressed concerns about FEMA’s performance and initiated a council to address these issues. The allegations come in the context of Trump’s criticism of the Biden administration’s policies related to immigrant housing assistance, which he feels divert necessary resources from disaster relief efforts. Additional concern stems from allegations that, during the final months of the Biden administration, FEMA supervisors were advising workers to avoid offering relief to homes “advertising Trump” in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has condemned the use of FEMA funds for immigrant aid, emphasizing it undermines support for American citizens. At the same time, newly appointed FEMA Director Cameron Hamilton vowed to end these payments and reprimand those involved.

“I want to thank the [DOGE] team for making me aware of this,” Hamilton said. “Effective yesterday these payments have all been suspended from FEMA. Personnel will be held accountable.”
