Elon Musk continues to be thrust into the Russia-Ukraine war. Previously it was because of his Starlink satellite internet service, and now he’s having to address claims that he has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin recently about the war in Ukraine and whether he’s talked to Putin about a peace plan that could end the war.

Tuesday, an American political scientist named Ian Bremmer said Musk told him about speaking with Putin last month.

Later Tuesday, Musk tweeted that what Bremmer said was untrue, and Musk has not spoken with Putin in over a year.

“I have spoken to Putin only once and that was about 18 months ago. The subject matter was space.”

Musk’s response resulted in Bremmer going on Twitter and responding to that.

“Elon Musk told me he had spoken with Putin and the Kremlin directly about Ukraine. He also told me what the Kremlin’s red lines were.”

Of course, Musk was not going to let that be the final word. He tweeted this.

“Nobody should trust Bremmer.”

So who is Bremmer? He works for a political risk research and consulting firm called Eurasia Group. Bremmer is frequently in the news quoting on world events and has been involved with the World Economic Forum in the past.

This exchange is vital because Musk tweeted last week about a “Ukraine-Russia peace plan.”

Here’s that message.

“Ukraine-Russia Peace: Redo elections of annexed regions under UN supervision. Russia leaves if that is will of the people. Crimea formally part of Russia, as it has been since 1783 (until Khrushchev’s mistake). Water supply to Crimea assured. Ukraine remains neutral. This is highly likely to be the outcome in the end — just a question of how many die before then. Also worth noting that a possible, albeit unlikely, outcome from this conflict is nuclear war.”

Musk’s involvement last week angered Ukraine.

Bremmer was standing by his initial message and posted this on Twitter Tuesday.

“I have been writing my weekly newsletter on geopolitics for 24 [years]. I write honestly without fear or favor and this week’s update was no different.

“I’ve long admired Musk as a unique and world-changing entrepreneur, which I’ve said publicly. He’s not a geopolitics expert.”
