Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has finally addressed Trump in a more head-on way. But instead of taking the gloves off and throwing a few well landed punches, DeSantis just came off as someone feeling sad. Smart approach.

Ron DeSantis took off to Tokyo amidst his state’s gas crisis to meet with the Japanese PM and strengthen his foreign policy bonafides. He took a moment to be interviewed by Sean Hannity while he was there.

DeSantis started off strong, saying that he won’t allow the Chinese Communist Party to purchase any land in Florida. With China’s encroachment on US interests, that certainly isn’t a bad policy point, and it adds a niche for him.

But then Hannity seemed to lament, “the last time I interviewed President Trump, I always saw the two of you as friends. I asked him, what happened?” DeSantis replied, “I enjoyed supporting him when he was president, we worked hard for his re-election in Florida, and I always had a really good relationship with him and then once the midterm election happened, he started taking shots at me. I didn’t really do anything to do it but to a good job.”

This may be a small story, but it further signals how DeSantis will handle Trump. He’s still too scared to simply insult the guy. And neither will he praise him and just drop out of the race. Instead, DeSantis wants people to feel sorry for him. He wants to paint himself as a victim. So each and every answer on Trump, almost certainly, will be this woe is me approach. He won’t actually attack Trump on personality or policy, making DeSantis again appear as timid, overly cautious, overly rehearsed and consultant driven. Long story short, DeSantis is looking less like a human being and more like a robot each minute.
