“Cancel everything,” that’s the message coming from Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti who announced new coronavirus restrictions at a press conference Wednesday night.

Residents of Los Angeles are still permitted to leave their homes for essential services, which include grocery shopping or health care but public gatherings of people from more than one household are forbidden, except for a church service or protest.

“My message couldn’t be simpler,” Garcetti said. “It’s time to hunker down. It’s time to cancel everything. And if it isn’t essential, don’t do it. Don’t meet up with others outside your household. Don’t host a gathering. Don’t attend a gathering.”

According to the order by the mayor, Los Angeles has seen more people infected with COVID-19 than at any point during the pandemic. The order signed by Garcetti basically mirrors the “Targeted Stay at Home Order” released by Los Angeles County last week

It’s interesting to point out that California as a whole has basically been under some form of a lockdown since the very early days of the pandemic. Clearly, the lockdowns are not helping control the virus, yet local and statewide officials continue to increase restrictions on the state’s residents and businesses.

Garcetti used his 30-minute press conference to roll out snappy lines like, “Just be smart and stay apart,” while his signed proclamation was much more ominous, starting out by saying, “All persons living within the City of Los Angeles are hereby ordered to remain in their homes.”

The order did lay out more than 40 business categories that are exempt from the “cancel everything” directive. The list includes liquor stores, cannabis dispensaries and tanning salons. So, it looks as though the mayor just wants you to cancel everything so you have more time to get drunk, get high and work on increasing your chances of skin cancer. It’s so great to have our government officials so concerned about our health.
