According to court filings made public on Wednesday, Special Counsel David Weiss will indict Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, on new charges by the end of September.
“The Speedy Trial Act requires that the Government obtain the return of an indictment by a grand jury by Friday, September 29, 2023, at the earliest. The Government intends to seek the return of an indictment in this case before that date,” prosecutors wrote in the filing.
While the filings do not reveal the exact charges brought against the First Son, they are reportedly related to the existing gun possession case already pending against him. As Valuetainment previously reported, in addition to several counts of tax evasion, Biden also faces a charge for illegally owning a firearm while being a known abuser of controlled substances.
Biden’s trail for these charges has been endlessly complicated by the political factors surrounding the case, not the least of which is the claim that the Department of Justice “slow-walked” the investigation to avoid blowback on the president.
While Biden had originally intended to plead guilty to the misdemeanor tax evasion charges in exchange for avoiding jail time on the gun charges, the plea deal fell apart following an objection from the judge. In response, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed David Weiss, US Attorney for Delaware, as a special counsel to lead the prosecution in last month.
Upon a status request from Judge Maryellen Noreika, Weiss submitted the aforementioned filing declaring his intent to indict before the end of the month.
Hunter Biden’s attorneys are expected to respond to the filing by the end of the day.
This is a breaking story. Stay tuned for updates.
