Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates released an open letter of his major predictions for 2024, hitting on everything from health crises to political upheavals due to climate change.

He wrote that he was motivated to do so by the birth of his granddaughter, which made him wonder what type of world she and her generation will “inherit.”

“I’m lucky that my work gives me insight into all the ways the world is getting better. The challenges we face feel a lot less daunting when you understand what exactly it will take to tackle them,” he wrote. “In this letter, I will share just a few reasons I am optimistic about the year ahead. I hope they make you as excited about all the progress to come as I am.”

Gates wagered that AI would speed up the advance of medical technology as well as the social justice movement. “It motivates me to make sure this technology helps reduce — and doesn’t contribute to — the awful inequities we see around the world. I’ve always been a firm believer in the power of innovation to offer every child an equal chance to survive and thrive. AI is no exception.”

But he also had some words to say about elections. “I recently read a statistic that blew my mind: More people might vote in 2024 than in any other year in history,” he wrote. He added that local elections are important too and should not be ignored.

He went on: “If I could make one wish for all the people headed to the polls next year — no matter where they live — it would be for them to consider electing leaders who understand the importance of investing in human development around the world. History has proven time and time again that, when governments choose to engage with and help people outside their borders, the entire world benefits.”

He underscored that because 2024 will be a turning point for the climate crisis and health research, “We cannot let extremism and polarization limit our choices.”

Gates also celebrated nuclear energy as “the only carbon-free energy source that can reliably deliver power day and night, through every season, almost anywhere on earth, that has been proven to work on a large scale,” and said it must be part of the response to climate change. He claims that there has been a shift in the thinking on nuclear power in the international environmentalist movement.
