At a fundraising event in California this week, President Joe Biden reportedly made some off-color remarks when discussing the modern Republican Party, unfavorably comparing it not with progressives but with out-and-out racial segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond (D-SC), with whom Bidem worked earlier in his career.

“I’ve served with real racists,” he reportedly said. “I’ve served with Strom Thurmond. I’ve served with all these guys that have set terrible records on race. But guess what? [Modern Republicans] are worse. These guys do not believe in basic democratic principles.”

“By the time Strom left, he did terrible things,” Biden went on, referring to Thurmond’s endorsement of racial segregation. But, Biden added as a caveat that Thurmond hired more Black people “in his staff than any other member in Congress” and “voted to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act.”

“I’m not making him more than he was. But my point is, at least you could work with some of these guys.”

Biden had to apologize during the 2020 election for voicing positive opinions on Southern segregationist politicians.

“Now was I wrong a few weeks ago, to somehow give the impression to people that I was praising those men who I successfully opposed time and again? Yes, I was. I regret it. I’m sorry for any of the pain or misconception that I caused anybody,” he said in July 2019. “But did that misstep define 50 years of my record for fighting for civil rights, racial justice in this country? I hope not. I don’t think so. That just isn’t an honest assessment of my record.”

The former Vice President also gave a eulogy at Thurmand’s funeral in 2003, for which he was given a fair share of grief on the 2020 campaign trail.
