President Joe Biden is implementing a new climate rule that seriously hobbles fossil fuel power plants. They have to cut their greenhouse gas pollution by 90% before 2040 or shut down completely.
This comes after Biden issued a draconian electric car production law, while regulating the gas that comes from people’s stoves.
Any coal producing state is expected do plunge into an even deeper economic catastrophe.
The administration is also prepared to spend hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars to create pipelines to transport the gas via underground.
EPA Administrator Michael Regan said, “the public health and environmental benefits of this proposed rule will be tremendous.”
However, the Supreme Court might step in the way. Obama tried to do something similar in 2015, but the court declared his efforts unconstitutional. It was stalled until the Trump administration let it die completely.
Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming notes that Biden’s axing of current energy will come much more quickly than the ability to gain this new, environmentally friendly energy. The supply chain aspect just doesn’t work. Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia called Biden’s efforts government overreach and said he’d oppose all of Biden’s EPA nominee until he stops.
And the energy alternatives don’t real seem to be that helpful. Carbon capture was one option, but the EPA rejected saying it couldn’t be regulated in a prudent, economically sensible manner. One one coal plant has carbon capture.
This is not a wise move, as Biden makes the environment his pet project over combatting inflation and improving the economy. Hardly a winning issue at the ballot box.
