On Wednesday night, as Republican presidential candidates faced off in the second primary debate, news broke that Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs (D) would be stepping down from her position for a 24-hour period. The cryptic announcement came via a statement from Republican state Treasurer Kimberly Yee, who became acting governor between Wednesday evening and mid-morning on Thursday.
A press release uploaded to Yee’s X account revealed that she was “pleased to step into this role” and would refrain from filling vacant positions in government agencies during her day-long time in office.

Yee further expressed her anticipation of Hobbs’ imminent return to the state to resume her post, getting back to work for the taxpayers.

Despite Yee’s suggestion that Hobbs was no longer in the state, the governor has not yet released a statement regarding her temporary absence. This lack of communication has spawned various conspiracy theories and drawn considerable mockery, particularly from Hobbs’ onetime gubernatorial challenger Kari Lake.
In fairness to @katiehobbs, she hasn’t been the real Governor of Arizona for a lot longer than that

Lake has notably maintained that the 2022 election in Arizona was plagued with fraud and corruption, leading to Hobbs’ election. In a recent episode of the PBD Podcast, Lake sat down with Patrick Bet-David to discuss the suspicious circumstances surrounding her loss in that election.
