Controversial social media influencer Andrew Tate won an appeal on Friday to be released from house arrest while he awaits trial for alleged human trafficking and rape charges.

However, Tate will need to remain in the country until then. Under the new measure, Tate, his brother Tristan, and two additional suspects must remain in Bucharest and check in regularly with the police. They are also not allowed to approach alleged victims. The decision to release him from house arrest comes after prosecutors formally indicted the 36-year-old in June.

All four were arrested in late December near Bucharest and have denied all allegations against them. The court’s decision states all four defendants will be “subjected to geographical restrictions limiting them to the territories of Bucharest Municipality and the nearby Ilfov County unless they get prior approval from a judge.”

After Friday’s ruling, Andrew Tate posted in a tweet: “After 10 months. 3 in jail, 7 at home. After 15 million euro of asset seizures. After an indictement based on nothing. The file was passed to a Judge who has ruled it weak and circumstantial. I have been released from house arrest but must remain within Romania.”

Andrew Tate has been charged with human trafficking as well as allegedly raping one of the victims, while his brother Tristan was charged with inciting others to violence. Prosecutors claim the Tate brothers recruited their victims by seducing them and falsely claiming that they were interested in a relationship or marriage.

The Bucharest court of appeals said in a written ruling that it “replaces the house arrest measure with that of judicial control for a period of 60 days from August 4 until October 2.”
