The word “fan” stems from the word “fanatic.” What constitutes the difference between the two seemingly similar words? Well, a “fan” of Johnny Depp might be following his trail with Amber Heard online, reading some news reports about it, and hoping things turn out well for Jack Sparrow. A “fanatic” would be someone who has no problem spending up to $30,000 to get a front-row seat at the trail in Fairfax, Virginia.
A story in People Magazine quoted fans saying they camped out in their cars outside the courthouse to gain a coveted ticket inside. Some fans said they spent up to $30,000 on travel expenses to get there and stay in Virginia.
The way it goes down is this; huge crowds of people start lining up well before dawn to try and secure a coveted wristband that will gain them entrance into the courtroom. The lucky ones get to listen to testimony in person, and the others return the next day and try again.

“I’ve never been to a public trial before. I’ve never stayed up overnight for anything in line, and I came at 12:45 a.m.. I’ve never done something like this in my 46 years of life.”
Sharon Smith shows up at the courthouse at 1 a.m. every day, hoping to get a front-row seat. She lives in Los Angeles and flies back and forth each week. She said the hotel, food, and drinks alone cost her $10,000. The story in People referenced one morning when she stood in a rainstorm all morning.
Ivan De Boer has spent $30,000 traveling back and forth from LA to watch the spectacle.
“I took my whole year’s vacation so I could be here for Johnny. I’m the same age as Johnny. I’m single, so I do what I want to, basically.”
