Ukranian President Volodymir Zelensky has arrived in the U.S. First on his agenda is to meet with President Biden. Later this evening, Zelensky is expected to address Congress.

Today’s meeting comes as Congress prepares to discuss a massive spending bill that includes $45 billion for Ukraine assistance. Likely, $45 billion will not be given to Ukraine. Many lawmakers pledged to cut off the U.S. unlimited balance credit card once they got into office. So, what will Ukraine receive from the U.S. to keep the war against Russia going, and why is Zelensky here?

Shortly before the announcement of Zelensky’s arrival, the Associated Press reported the Biden administration would provide $1.85 billion in military aid. Included in the approved $1.85 billion budget will be one of Zelensky’s wish list items. Ukraine will receive a Patriot missile battery for the first time. Zelensky has long pressed for this weapon. The Patriot missile is the most advanced surface-to-air missile system being provided to Ukraine. The decision to give this weapon comes after Putin warned if done, the U.S. would become a legitimate target. Other weapons also included in the package are Joint Direct Attack Munitions kits. Also included in the budget is the agreement for the U.S. to fund satellite communications terminals and services.

While this seems like a lot of aid, Zelensky is asking for even more. The Ukranian President says he is in the U.S. to thank the American people, President Biden, and Congress for its much-needed support. He says he is here to “continue cooperation to bring our victory closer.” Before Congress decides on the $45 billion aid package, Zelensky will negotiate and persuade many lawmakers otherwise who are against sending more aid.
