The government is now on track to beat Friday’s deadline. The Senate has passed a nearly $1.7 trillion government funding bill. The bill is now headed to the House, where it is expected to quickly pass before heading to President Biden’s desk.
Passing the government funding bill ahead of the holiday break secures government funding through next September, preventing the new Congress from being pushed into a spending fight when Republicans take control of the House in January.
Here are some key provisions included in the funding bill that Democrats and Republicans had to agree on.

  • More than $38 billion in emergency disaster assistance for regions affected by recent natural disasters.
  • Banning TikTok on federal devices.
  • $45 billion in aid to Ukraine’s war efforts
  • A bipartisan deal to end the COVID-era Medicaid policy on April 1 2023.
  • $8 billion for the Child Care and Development Block Grant. The 30% increase is an effort to low-income families back to work.
  • A 4.6% raise for military troops and a 22.4% increase in support for Veteran Administration medical care.
  • Tax provisions aimed at preventing fraudulent tax breaks arising from land conservation deals and legislation to boost retirement savings in tax-advantaged
  • U.S Capitol Police to consider extending security for former House speakers for a year after they leave office. This provision also provides $2.5 million for a residential security system program for senators.
  • Passage of the Electoral Count Act
  • $2.6 billion in funding for Jan. 6 legal efforts

Now that the Senate has ushered in this legislation, they can travel home for the holidays ahead of a dangerous winter storm.
