Dan Simmons shares how his best friend Jimmy, a fellow Green Beret and an “absolute beast” who had walked away from insane combat situations that should have killed him, died in the most ordinary way imaginable.
They had just gone out for drinks in Colorado Springs before Jimmy’s training trip to San Diego, and two days later Dan woke up to “RIP Jimmy” all over Facebook—Jimmy had walked across the street from his hotel to grab water and snacks when a texting driver hit him going 60 mph and killed him on the spot.
