Sanctuary cities are a major problem in America and New York City is discovered this the hard way. A sanctuary city is a municipality that limits its cooperation with the national government in enforcing immigration law.

Naturally, these cities attract a large number of illegal immigrants. However, with the end of Title 42, New York City has been in a state of crisis with 93,000 immigrants migrating to the city this year alone. Mayor Eric Adams has called for federal assistance, stating that cities cannot handle the national crisis alone.

In sanctuary cities, illegal immigrants are often accommodated with hotel rooms, over 3,500 NYC hotels rooms are currently being used to house these people, but there are far too few available hotel rooms to house them all. Therefore, large groups of migrants are living of the NYC sidewalks with nowhere to go.

Some people might argue that this is the right thing for cities to do because these people have nowhere else to go. The opposing argument would say that Democratic politicians don’t care about helping these people, that they want more immigrants in the city because it increases their odds of getting re-elected.

The reality is the this is not a black and white issue. Immigration is very beneficial for America, but illegal immigration is disorderly. The problem is that the process for getting legal citizenship in America is very long and difficult. The current system rewards people for immigrating to America illegally and punishes them for doing it legally.
