A U.S. Navy ship intercepted multiple projectiles off the coast of Yemen on Thursday, according to two U.S. officials that spoke to the press.

The missiles were allegedly launched by Iranian-backed Houthi militants involved in a conflict in Yemen. According to one official, “approximately 2-3 missiles” were intercepted.

Defense Department Secretary Brigadier General Pat Ryder confirmed that the USS Carney shot down three missiles as well as several drones launched by the Houthi forces Thursday afternoon.

“This action was a demonstration of the integrated air and missile defense architecture that we built in the Middle East and that we are prepared to utilize whenever necessary to protect our partners and our interest in this important region,” Ryder said at a presser. “There were no casualties to US forces and none that we know of to any civilians on the ground.”

Ryder said the Pentagon was unable to establish what the militants were targeting, but disclosed that the projectiles were headed north along the Red Sea “potentially toward targets in Israel.”

The USS Carney was transiting through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea on Wednesday. US Fleet Forces command said on a social media post it would “help ensure maritime security and stability in the Middle East.”
