Ukraine just pulled off what it’s calling the world’s first evacuation of a wounded soldier by aerial drone. The soldier was stranded in a mined position under constant Russian drone surveillance, and ground robots couldn’t reach him. So crews took the Ayudag-6, a six-rotor bomber drone that weighs about 100 kg and can carry 70–90 kg, fitted it with a winch, and dropped him a harness with carabiners. He clipped in after following a video tutorial from his unit, and the drone flew him out to safety. A purpose-built rescue drone, SkyFall’s StarGate, which can carry 150 kg, is already in testing. Is this the future of battlefield medicine?
