Move over Twitter, there’s a new competitor in this social media town. Facebook parent Meta Platforms launched its new social media site “Threads” on Wednesday as a rival to Elon Musk’s Twitter platform. The launch resulted in more than 5 million sign-ups within the first four hours, according to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Within the first seven hours, Forbes reported the “Threads” app garnered 10 million sign-ups, posing a serious threat to Twitter. Users aged 12 and older can log into the app using their Instagram accounts. The app allows people to post and reply to threads and follow profiles they are interested in. These threads and replies can include short pieces of text, links, photos, videos or a combination of them.

According to listings on Apple’s app store and Google’s Play Store, Threads is a platform where “communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow.”
It continues, “whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things – or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world.”
“Threads is here. Let’s do this,” Zuckerberg said in posts on the latest app as well as Facebook.
Responding to a question about Threads possibly becoming bigger that Twitter, Zuckerberg wrote: “It’ll take some time, but I think there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion+ people on it. Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn’t nailed it. Hopefully we will.”
Just this past week, social media platform Blue Sky founded by former CEO Jack Dorsey, was released in hopes of adding some competition to Elon Musk’s Twitter platform.
“Our plan is to make Threads part of the fediverse – a social network of different servers operated by third parties that are connected and can communicate with each other,” the Threads app said.
“Our vision is that Threads will enable you to communicate with people on other fediverse platforms that we don’t own or control.”
