According to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former President Donald Trump is too liberal when it comes to LGBT issues.

He released a video of Trump pledging support to the LGBT community after the Pulse nightclub shooting. “I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens,” Trump said. He even got the “Q” in there.

DeSantis’s Twitter account shared a video posted by another user that included Trump’s sympathetic quote, along with a montage of other statements that were supportive of the community:

“To wrap up ‘Pride Month,’ let’s hear from the politician who did more than any other Republican to celebrate it…” the DeSantis War Room account tweeted.

The video also boasts a quote from a mainstream media article saying, “DeSantis signs most extreme slate of anti-Trans laws in history.” Clearly, DeSantis is tacking to Trump’s right, especially after signing a 6 week abortion ban, while calling Trump not sufficiently conservative on the issue.

But all this makes DeSantis seem far too intolerant for a general election. You’re really going to slam a guy for offering sympathy after a mass shooting? It’s a dangerous game, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie confirmed that saying, “they’re trying to divide us further. And it’s wrong. It’s absolutely wrong, it is a teenage, you know, food fight, between Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump.”

Although, DeSantis is making some progress with his right-ward lurch. He also criticized Trump for not completing the border wall as he took a helicopter along the border, pointing out his unfinished business. Trump is seeing himself poll below 50% in three key primary states, with him only one point ahead (31 percent to 30 percent) of DeSantis in Wisconsin. There’s a ton of ground to make up for nationally,  but it might just be a recipe for primary victory. Still, consider DeSantis cooked come general election time.
