Former President Donald Trump published an op-ed in The Daily Mail yesterday warning that a Venezuelan gang known as Tren de Aragua is now operating in the United States due to lax border enforcement policies under the Biden administration. Police reports in Miami and Chicago have confirmed this, as have agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Trump added anecdotes about some recent killings and violent acts carried out by migrants:

“In New York City, NYPD officers were recently mobbed and viciously beaten by a pack of migrant criminals. In Michigan, gangs of migrants are stalking suburban houses and plundering them for valuables. And in Georgia just last week, 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley was savagely attacked and murdered on the campus of the University of Georgia. Biden is preposterously trying to blame me and Congressional Republicans for the national security and public safety disaster he has created.”

Members of Tren de Aragua, or “The Aragua Train,” have been seen in Chicago since October 2023, according to a local Telemundo station. The network claims to have reviewed emails from the Chicago office of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) which reveal they have had knowledge of Aragua gang activity since at least the fall. “The gang has strong human trafficking operations in Latin America,” the emails read.

Telemundo also reported that a 23-year-old member named Yurwin Salazar has been accused of murdering a retired Venezuelan police officer in the state of Florida.

According to officials in the region, Tren de Aragua is the largest criminal syndicate in Venezuela. “Whether it’s drug trafficking, smuggling, human trafficking for sexual exploitation, extortion, and all those things that this gang is doing in South America,” said police chief of Willow Spring Gary McCarthy.

An FBI agent based in El Paso, Texas confirmed to CNN in January that multiple members of Tren de Aragua have entered the United States.

“The Aragua Train is in the United States. We already have evidence that they crossed the border and we were able to confirm that through interviews with gang members after the crossing. They are crossing and there is a presence,” said the deputy special agent Britton Boyd.

In November, the Border Patrol confirmed to CNN that 38 alleged members of the gang had been detained.

The gang is led by Héctor Guerrero, who goes by “Niño Guerrero,” who escaped from the Tocorón prison in Venezuela. Authorities have lost track of him and have issued an international warrant for his arrest. The FBI is monitoring the US southern border, as they suspect he may attempt to cross into American territory.

“Our main concern is that they can organize cells in the United States, cells like the ones they already have in South America,” Boyd said.

“Upon taking office, I will restore every strong border policy I had before — and impose tough additional measures to keep out the gang members, human traffickers, sadists, and thugs,” Trump’s article concluded. “[Biden] has betrayed your trust, and with his demolition of our borders, he has betrayed our country. The first step to border security is voting Biden out of office this November.”
