Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, the biological man who ignited the debate over trans participation in women’s sports, was photographed in a shirt that labeled him an “Antifa Super Soldier.”

Lia Thomas (formerly known as William) first rose to fame in 2022 when he went from performing unremarkably on the University of Pennsylvania’s men’s swim team to winning an NCAA Division I championship on the women’s team.

Since then, Thomas has been at the center of the much larger debate over transgenderism, and many of his former teammates have spoken out about their objection to his inclusion on the team. Many women were uncomfortable sharing a locker room with and showering alongside a biological male, but they allege that the response from UPenn faculty compelled them to stay silent.

Thomas has since moved on to become a more vocal advocate for transgender inclusion, accusing “anti-feminists” of pushing “transphobic beliefs.” However, in recent months, he has become increasingly controversial outside the realm of sports as details of his personal life are made public.

The latest controversy comes courtesy of an Instagram post shared by the UPenn swimmer’s partner, Gwen Luxemburg. In the photo, Thomas is seen wearing sunglasses, what appears to be a black leather BDSM harness, and a black t-shirt with “Antifa Super Soldier” printed in psychedelic bubble letters.

Antifa, short for “anti-fascist,” is considered a domestic terrorist group.

This loosely organized group of left-wing radicals has been at the forefront of mass protests for the last decade. In the summer of 2020, Antifa was responsible for destruction of property, assaults, and even murder—all while most of the Democratic Party denied that the group even existed. Antifa also forged close ties with the transgender movement in recent years, with certain cells rebranding as “Trantifa” to advocate for violent militancy against critics of trans ideology.

“Doesn’t this make so much make sense?” asked Riley Gaines, a former NCAA swimmer who famously lost a championship title to Thomas and has since become a public defender of women’s sports. “I haven’t specifically bashed Lia Thomas on anything (other than calling him an entitled narcissist which I stand by) because ultimately he was following the rules in place. But this is disturbing.

Gaines has spoken out extensively about her experiences swimming against Thomas, highlighting the fear of cancel culture attacks and ruined livelihoods present in the team locker room.

And given Thomas’ status as an “Antifa Super Soldier,” maybe those fears were more justified than anyone knew.
