I don’t know about you, but I would have little use for a handful of dimes sitting in a bowl on top of a nightstand.  It’s not like you can plug a parking meter for enough time to matter.  So, on the surface, it’s hard to fathom why some nut job crook would want to have 2 million dimes lying around.

According to police in Philadelphia, a truck driver picked up $750,000 worth of dimes from the US Mint in Philly and then parked that truck in a mall parking lot last week. He planned to take them to Florida.  He had this stash sorted in the trailer of his vehicle — with the coins organized into 15 pallets.

Unfortunately, someone broke into the truck overnight and stole 200,000 of the dimes while the driver went home to rest. That’s 2 million coins taken away, a heist that landed the crooks $200K worth of dimes.

Here’s a quote from Philadelphia police captain John Ryan that aired on NBC Philadelphia. “Common practice with drivers to pick up loads. He was going to Florida. They park the truck overnight to get on the road in the morning.  There’s been a lot of cargo thefts here and there in north-east Philly and south Philadelphia over the ensuing months where we’ve had lamb, chicken, TVs, refrigerators, etc. taken, alcohol.”

The crooks left a heck of a mess that took hours to clean up all the dimes that were scattered all around the parking lot. Police said they were looking for ten or more males wearing black clothing and gray hoodies. They are also searching for a white Chrysler 300 and a dark-colored pickup truck that may have been involved.

As for the truck driver, no word if he faces some criminal charge.  If you are in your neighborhood grocery store in the coming days, be on the lookout for a group of males carrying in wheelbarrows full of dimes to put into the change machines that spit out real cash.

They could be wanted by the police.
