Dan Simmons says Hollywood can’t come close to capturing real combat, because what sticks with him from the worst firefights isn’t the visuals but the smells—blood and guts hitting wet mud, gunpowder hanging in the air, mortars and heavy artillery freshly fired.

When people ask if he misses it, he answers “every day,” not because he craves violence, but because nothing in civilian life can replicate the brotherhood of men who willingly leave their families, stand beside you in that chaos, and are ready to stay with you “even until death.”
