The once highly respected last name Murdaugh, is now stained with deceit, theft and murder. Unless you have been living under a rock, Alex Murdaugh, a once prominent and established South Carolina lawyer, is on trial for the double murder of his wife and son.
Investigators have said Maggie Murdaugh, 52, was shot four or five times with a rifle, while Paul Murdaugh, 22, was killed by two shotgun blasts near kennels on the family’s sprawling Colleton County property in June 2021.
But the family’s troubles didn’t end there. In September 2021, Alex’s own shooting was reported as an attempted murder. However, reports later emerged that Alex had allegedly orchestrated the shooting to collect a $10 million insurance policy. This revelation led to a cascade of scandals involving the Murdaugh family.
It was soon discovered that Alex had been involved in a long-standing embezzlement scheme at his law firm, which saw him misappropriating funds from clients. He was subsequently disbarred and now faces multiple lawsuits and criminal charges.
The Murdaugh family’s troubles also extend to tax fraud. The family has been accused of using a complex network of trusts and shell companies to hide millions of dollars in assets from the IRS. The family’s tax fraud has been estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars, and investigations are ongoing.
Although Murdaugh has admitted guilt to some crimes, he denies that he killed his wife and son.
Streaming services like HBO Max, debuted the documentary, Low Country: The Murdaugh Dynasty, while Netflix dropped Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal last week, the day before Alex Murdaugh took the stand in his own defense.
If found guilty, Alex Murdaugh faces up to 30 years in prison without parole.
While many of us love a good modern-day murder documentary, the story of a South Carolina family dynasty collapsing in real time, stands out as the juiciest, most disturbing true crime story of our day. We will be keeping an eye on the verdict of this trial.
